How to improve gut health in laying hens?

What is overfeeding?

Overfeeding means that there are residual feed particles in the feed that have not been completely digested; the cause of overfeeding is a disorder in the chicken’s digestive function, which results in the feed not being completely digested and absorbed.

Harmful effects of overfeeding
Chickens often suffer from diarrhea or semi-diarrhea, drainage-like or paste-like thin feces, so prolonged overfeeding will lead to dehydration, wasting, growth retardation, weakening or loss of digestive function, the intestinal wall in the water-salt imbalance leads to damage, harmful bacteria invasion, will stimulate the occurrence of bacterial diseases, affecting the laying hens’ egg production and egg quality.

Intestinal improvement methods

1、Use of additives
In daily production, we generally use additives that are beneficial to the intestinal tract to repair the intestinal mucosa or maintain the balance of intestinal flora, and encourage the physical and microbial barriers of the chicken body to give full play to their role, so as to achieve the purpose of improving intestinal health.
2、Avoid abusing antibiotics
Nowadays, many egg farms inject antibiotics on the first day after the chicks come out of the shell to reduce the dead rate in the early days of brooding, and this practice is wrong.
When abnormalities occur in the flock, the typical symptoms of the chicken should be dissected, do bacterial culture, combined with clinical symptoms to make a preliminary diagnosis. For fungi, viruses and other non-bacterial infections in the flock, antibacterial drugs can not be used to treat; bacterial diseases should be based on the results of drug sensitivity tests to carefully select antibiotics, so that not only to achieve the best results of medication, and most importantly, to ensure that the chemical barrier and the physical barrier to give full play to its role in maintaining the balance of intestinal flora.
3、Promote intestinal development
The intestinal tract of chicks accounts for a larger proportion of the whole body, and the influence of the intestinal tract is the most obvious in the brooding period, so it is necessary to strengthen the early management of chicks, provide them with appropriate rearing density, environmental conditions, feed and drinking water, and promote the chicks to reach the standard body weight at an early stage, so that the intestinal tract can be more fully developed.
4、Control the occurrence of coccidiosis
Coccidiosis often breaks out in the process of rearing due to rearing density, environmental conditions and other reasons. Therefore, it is recommended that we immunize against coccidiosis vaccine, in order to ensure the effect of immunization, we should operate in strict accordance with the vaccine instructions, at the same time, 14 days after the immunization of anti-coccidiosis drugs are prohibited, it should also be noted that doxycycline has an interfering effect on the establishment of coccidiosis immunity, so it is prohibited within 3 weeks.
